Only 50 of approximately 100,000 glaciers in Alaska are tidewater glaciers , and they ‘re some of the biggest. Primarily a massive ice sheet, Greenland has about 200 outlet glaciers , but the water there is much colder compared to the temperature in LeConte Bay.
About 5 percent of Alaska’s area is covered by more than 100,000 glaciers — that’s about 29,000 square miles (75,000 square kilometers), or more than the entire state of West Virginia.
Just 15 miles from Seward—where many cruises embark and disembark—Exit Glacier is one of the most popular road-accessible glaciers in the state. In fact, you can walk almost right up to the face of it in 30 minutes, by way of the Edge of the Glacier Trail.

As the melt water from a glacier starts to flow in the spring time it carries with it glacier silt or rock flour. The rock flour is very light and stays suspended in the lake water for a long time. The sunlight that reflects off these particles is what gives the lakes their spectacular turquoise blue or green colour.

One of the world’s thickest mountain glaciers is melting because of global warming. The Taku Glacier, located north of Juneau, Alaska , has started to retreat as temperatures rise. Worldwide, our planet’s glaciers are losing up to 390 billion tons of ice and snow per year.
Also for the first time in recorded history, Alaska’s sea ice has melted completely away. That means there was no sea ice whatsoever within 150 miles of its shores, according to the National Weather Service, as the northernmost state cooked under record-breaking heat through the summer.
While Alaska is the largest state by area, it’s among the smallest in population: Only about 740,000 people call the state home. Alaska boasts the lowest population density in the nation, with fewer than 1.5 people per square mile.
One-fifth the size of the Lower 48, Alaska is bigger than Texas , California, and Montana combined! Alaska is also far-flung: 3.1 times wider (east to west) and 1.9 times taller (north to south) than Texas .
