Estimates are for a one-week trip for two with airfare from the continental U.S. to Alaska. Even the cheapskates will need to spend nearly $1,000 each. We ended up paying $3,829 , which breaks down to $1,914.50 each. It wasn’t the cheapest vacation I’ve ever taken, but it might have been the most memorable.
The Cheapest Way to Alaska — Flying remains the cheapest and by far the simplest way to get to Alaska . Take other means only for the adventure, not for the savings. Round-trip train, ferry, and bus fare between Seattle and Anchorage costs considerably more than a good airfare between the same cities.
Anchorage will be a cheaper flight but from Fairbanks it’s a bit shorter and more scenic trip to Denali (unless Mt. McKinley is visible, but it isn’t usually).
As the 49th State, U.S. residents don’t need a passport to go to Alaska , but as of October 1, 2020, you will need a REAL ID. REAL ID compliant identification includes a state-issued REAL ID, U.S. Passport , military ID, or other form of compliant ID.

If you’re on a tight budget, be happy if you’re dining in Alaska , where pizzas are the cheapest at just $7.25 a pop. You’re also getting a good deal in Maine and Kentucky, where the median price is $7.50 and $8, respectively.

Sadly, there is no rail connection through Canada to Alaska , but there are plenty of amazing ways to get here. There are four main ways to reach Alaska . By flying, by cruise ship, using the state ferry system or by driving the Alaska Highway through Canada.

Unless you’re heading north of Fairbanks on the Dalton Hiway, there’s absolutely no reason to go there other than to say you’ve been there. The Alaskaland Park and the city center are nice, but, very simply, not worth the effort to go there. The Univ of Alaska museum in Fairbanks is excellent but not worth the trip.
