When is the best month to visit Alaska ? You can’t go wrong visiting Alaska anytime between May 10 and September 15. The days are long, nature is in full bloom, and the air is alive with energy. But, for the absolute best time to visit Alaska , shoot for June 15 to July 15.

The easy answer is that Alaska is big and sparsely populated, access to many places is difficult and it’s far from places where goods are manufactured. Shipping is, therefore, expensive , and it drives up the costs of everything from gasoline to lumber to finished consumer goods. Hence, everything is more expensive .

How many days do you need for an Alaska vacation? The sweet spot for an Alaska vacation is seven to 10 days . If you’re traveling on a land tour only, in seven days you can go all the way from Kenai Fjords National Park to Denali National Park with plenty of time for day-long guided excursions along the way.

Estimates are for a one-week trip for two with airfare from the continental U.S. to Alaska. Even the cheapskates will need to spend nearly $1,000 each. We ended up paying $3,829 , which breaks down to $1,914.50 each. It wasn’t the cheapest vacation I’ve ever taken, but it might have been the most memorable.
Unless you’re heading north of Fairbanks on the Dalton Hiway, there’s absolutely no reason to go there other than to say you’ve been there. The Alaskaland Park and the city center are nice, but, very simply, not worth the effort to go there. The Univ of Alaska museum in Fairbanks is excellent but not worth the trip.
U.S. citizens flying between another state and Alaska do not need a passport . All non U.S. citizens will need a passport and possibly other documents to enter . As with all travel , check with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration as you plan your trip.
