Alaska Natives or Alaskan Natives are indigenous peoples of Alaska , United States and include: Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and a number of Northern Athabaskan cultures. For this reason, genetic studies show they are not closely related to native peoples in South America .
Alaska’s indigenous people, who are jointly called Alaska Natives , can be divided into five major groupings: Aleuts, Northern Eskimos (Inupiat), Southern Eskimos (Yuit), Interior Indians (Athabascans) and Southeast Coastal Indians (Tlingit and Haida).
The term First Nations is preferred for peoples covered by the Indian Act, and Indigenous peoples preferred for Native peoples generally. This is also preferred when referring to Inuit and Métis, who do not fall under the ” First Nations ” category.
