Alaska is cold , very cold . Alaska has the coldest winters, the coldest summers, the longest winter, the most freezing degree days, and on and on. Temperatures in the -30°s and -40°s are a near daily occurrence from November through March in the interior portion of the state.
Antarctica averages at least 35 degrees colder than the Arctic. The highest temperature ever recorded at the geographic South Pole , located on Antarctica , is 9.9 degrees F. That just nips Alaska’s coldest official temperature, a -80 F felt at Prospect Creek off the Dalton Highway north of the Yukon River on Jan.
That’s true, Fairbanks is MUCH colder than Anchorage in Winter — conversely Fairbanks is warmer in Summer than Anchorage . Fairbanks is located deep in the interior of Alaska where temperatures are not affected by ocean temperatures therefore Fairbanks is MUCH colder in Winter and warmer in Summer.

In winter, Fairbanks ‘ low-lying location at the bottom of the Tanana Valley causes cold air to accumulate in and around the city. Warmer air rises to the tops of the hills north of Fairbanks , while the city itself experiences one of the biggest temperature inversions on Earth.
I would definitely choose Anchorage over Fairbanks . Anchorage is a coastal city that is much more cosmopolitan and closer to the more “popular” national parks in the state. Anchorage reminds me of a smaller Seattle. It has much more of a big city feel than Fairbanks .
