Although the average daily temperatures throughout Southeast Alaska are in the 60s Fahrenheit in August , extreme highs near 90 and lows below 20 have been reported. Expect the temperature to fluctuate by 30 degrees or more in a single day regardless of when you cruise .
Alaskan cruise season is May through September with July and August being the highest season attracting the most travelers. Convention holds that the best months to cruise Alaska are July and August when the temperatures are at their highest and the weather is generally sunnier.
The key to comfort in Alaska in August is wearing layered, breathable clothing . Even on the warmest days, activities that take you onto the water or into the mountains can require a jacket over a T-shirt and comfortable jeans or hiking shorts.

Mosquitoes are most prevalent in the open tundra of Interior and Far North Alaska , densely forested woods, and bogs or marshes. They’re most prevalent after a hatch, with the mosquito population spiking late June through July, and again, briefly, at the beginning of August .
Fairbanks’ Aurora Season is from August 21 to April 21 and the aurora will be visible in Fairbanks an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough. Scientifically speaking, the aurora is dancing above year-round, but we can only see it during the Aurora Season when we have dark enough skies.
