There are five main border crossings between Alaska and Canada : on the Alaska Highway south of Tok; the Top of the World Highway, east of Chicken; and three in the Southeast, at Pleasant Camp, British Columbia, east of Haines; at Fraser, B.C. between Skagway and Whitehorse; and between Hyder and Stewart, B.C.
The provinces are, in alphabetical order: Alberta, British Columbia , Manitoba , New Brunswick , Newfoundland and Labrador , Nova Scotia , Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The three territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut , and Yukon.
There are 13 states that border Canada : Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Alaska.
The Alaska Highway Canada /US border is open year-round.
There are two main reasons. First, Canada wasn’t its own country in 1867. Second, Great Britain controlled the Canadian colonies. Russia did not want to sell Alaska to its rival.
The purchase of Alaska in 1867 marked the end of Russian efforts to expand trade and settlements to the Pacific coast of North America , and became an important step in the United States rise as a great power in the Asia-Pacific region.

Alberta and New Brunswick are the only two Canadian provinces that straddle a single American state each. British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, shares two international borders with the United States.
The Canada-United States border is the longest international border in the World at 5,525 miles. There are more than 100 land border crossings between Canada and the USA, although not all of these are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week year round.
1. Maine . The US state of Maine shares a 611-mile (983 km) long border with Quebec and New Brunswick, the third longest state boundary with Canada .
U.S. citizens flying between another state and Alaska do not need a passport . However, those driving through Canada or traveling on a ferry or cruise ship with stops in Canada are required to carry one. All non U.S. citizens will need a passport and possibly other documents to enter.
The border between the United States and Canada is closed to all nonessential travel . However, Americans and foreigners can drive to and from Alaska as long as they follow specific mandates. With the new rules, they’ll have to use one of five designated border crossings to enter Canada .
Americans traveling to Alaska through Canada for work or to return home will now face firmer rules to prevent what is being coined the ‘ Alaska loophole ,’ where Americans claim to be Alaska -bound to skirt the border closure to non-essential travel.
