Unlike most national parks in the United States, Katmai is almost exclusively accessed by plane or boat. You can not drive to Katmai , Brooks Camp, or King Salmon from Anchorage , Alaska. Boats can access the Pacific coast of Katmai .
The park is located on the Alaska Peninsula, across from Kodiak Island, with headquarters in nearby King Salmon , about 290 miles (470 km) southwest of Anchorage .

The closest access point to Brooks Falls ! Katmai Water Taxi is the official water transportation option to Brooks Falls and Katmai National Park! Opperating June 1 – September 25. Upon your arrival, you will be shuttled from the King Salmon, Alaska Airport to the National Park Service dock.
When can you see bears in Alaska ? The Alaska cruise season begins in late April and continues through September. This coincides with the best time to view bears in Alaska – July through early September.
Some of the most incredible bear viewing in Alaska is near Anchorage. Iconic spots like Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park , Lake Clark National Park , Redoubt Bay and McNeil River are all a short float plane flight from the city, and many air services can get you there for a day of unrivaled access.

Getting around Kenai Fjords Exit Glacier is the only area of the park accessible by car. If you are here without a car, shuttle and taxi services are available between Exit Glacier and Seward. Boat tours provide day trips to view the fjords , tidewater glaciers, and marine wildlife.
Getting There Kobuk Valley National Park is very remote. There are no roads to provide access, so planes take care of most transportation needs. Commercial airlines provide service from Anchorage to Kotzebue, or from Fairbanks to Bettles. Once in Kotzebue or Bettles, you must fly to the park with authorized air taxis.
