Pacific region
ALASKA was a Russian colony from 1744 until the USA bought it in 1867 for $7,200,000. It was made a state in 1959. Hawaii was a kingdom until 1893 and became a republic in 1894. It then ceded itself to the USA in 1898 and became a state in 1959.
The states of Alaska and Hawaii have two major attributes in common . They are the two most recent states. Alaska was admitted to the Union in January of 1959, Hawaii in August of that year. They are also the only two states that are not contiguous with the other 48.
* The region includes OREGON, WASHINGTON, IDAHO, CALIFORNIA, NEVADA, HAWAII and the U.S. TERRITORIES in the Pacific Ocean. * The PACIFIC REGION has more protected species than any other region .
CONUS = The 48 CONtiguous States and the District of Columbia or “the lower 48, as they’re affectionately known to the Alaskans.” Overseas = Any country or place beyond the CONUS . Alaska , Hawaii and the U.S. territories are considered overseas under the Space-A Regulation.
The terms exclude the non-contiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii , and all other off-shore insular areas, such as American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and Puerto Rico.
The purchase of Alaska in 1867 marked the end of Russian efforts to expand trade and settlements to the Pacific coast of North America , and became an important step in the United States rise as a great power in the Asia-Pacific region.
1898: Hawaii annexed as a United States territory. 1959: Alaska and Hawaii admitted, respectively, as the 49th and 50th states of the Union.
Queen Liliuokalani attempted to restore royal powers in 1893 but was placed under house arrest by businessmen with help from the US military. Against the Queen’s wishes, the Republic of Hawaii was formed for a short time. This government agreed on behalf of Hawaii to join the US in 1898 as the Territory of Hawaii.
The United States wanted Hawaii to acquire its islands and because it was a port way to China, East India and Asia. Not only did they want the islands, but they wanted their naval base. They wanted their naval base for war so they would have another advantage to help defeat the other country.
Hawaii – more luxurious/expensive than Alaska but also more contemporary. There are options for affordable condos and long-term stays. Outdoor amenities included and proximity to beaches and attractions directly from your hotel room or condo. Restaurants and stores are often within walking distance.
Alaska Is Big! You could fit Hawaii into Alaska 60 times! One-fifth the size of the Lower 48, Alaska is bigger than Texas, California, and Montana combined! Alaska is also far-flung: 1.8 times wider (east to west) and 2.6 times taller (north to south) than Hawaii .
Pacific Coast , region, western North America, possessing two unifying geologic and geographic properties—the Pacific Ocean , which constitutes a natural western border, and the coastal mountain ranges that form the eastern border of the region.
Outline the three main areas of the South Pacific: Melanesia , Micronesia , and Polynesia . Distinguish between low islands and high islands. Determine which islands remain under the auspices of France, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, or the United States.
