Both braid and mono are ideal for pike fishing so long as they are up to the job. If you intend fishing with a mono mainline then opt for a line of 12lb or even 15lb breaking strain, and if you’re intending to use braid, go for a 30lb breaking strain.
Pike can be caught throughout the year , but are most active during cold water seasons – from fall to spring. This is why they’re very popular during winter times when lakes and rivers are frozen.

Fluorocarbon
Pike are visual feeders, and tend to be attracted to bright colors. Use high-visibility colors like white, chartreuse, and bright orange. They also respond well to baits that put off lots of vibration or sound.
Pike absolutely love spinners of all kinds but the Mepps #5 or the big Blue Fox in silver, silver and blue, or gold work best. These produce well in any situation and work well in quickly casting and working an area. For pike , the smaller size- #5- definitely works better than the larger musky bucktails.
Northern pike seek areas of dense vegetation in streams, lakes, and large rivers. They tend to occupy the shallow waters near the shore with covering. They prefer cool water, and therefore will head to the deeper water around midsummer.

Rig a bait in the 6- to 12-inch range on a size 1/0 hook, with a snelled wire leader attached to a snap-swivel. Position the float so that it holds the bait , hooked lightly through the back, a foot or two above the weeds. Give the pike a couple of minutes to turn the bait around in its mouth before you set the hook.
no its not illegal , its been used all the time for carp. Corn is legal bait (on a hook), illegal to chum (feeding the fish ). However, while the majority of states allow corn as bait, it is not always legal to attract fish by chumming with corn .

Navajo, Eleven Mile, William’s Fork and Stagecoach, which produced the current state record (over 30 pounds), are among over a dozen quality pike fishing reservoirs in Colorado . Spinney Mountain Reservoir is also excellent for pike fishing .
Pike will bite through braid , maybe not every time but when you least want to lose your fish it will go.
So, do you need a wire trace for pike ? Because of their sharp teeth, wire traces for pike are an absolute must. When fishing with smaller lures that the pike can inhale easily, or when using dead or live baitfish, a rather long wire trace should be used.
Contrary to popular belief, northern pike are actually a deliciously tasty fish if done right. They are chock full of bones; however, with a little care and know how, one is able to fillet a pike such that there won’t be a bone to be found. See the video for tips on how I like to clean pike .
