Trail Ridge Road, passing through Rocky Mountain National Park between the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake, is one of the best ways to see the Continental Divide as it cuts through Colorado. Splitting North America with a serpentine line, the Continental Divide is quite literally the roof of the continent.
The trail is most commonly hiked from South to North starting at the Mexican border. The trail passes through five states – New Mexico , Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana – and ends at the Canadian border in Glacier National Park .
Colorado .com Staff Writer However, because of its length, altitude — and in many places, sheer ruggedness — the Colorado Trail can be hard to get your hands around at first. It can take four to six weeks to hike the whole thing, but you can hike it in smaller segments.
You do not need a permit to hike The Colorado Trail with the exception of where it passes through wilderness areas.
For four to six months of walking, CDT thru-hikers have a laundry list of concerns that outpace those of many other long trails: grizzly bears , lightning storms, avalanche danger, unmarked or non-existent trails, long food and water carries, weeks at altitude, and raging snowmelt-filled river fords.
For example, the Continental Divide of the Americas, or the Great Divide , runs through much of North and South America. It separates the water that runs toward the Pacific Ocean from the water that runs toward the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico.

The CDT is not the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route; instead, it’s nearly 3,100 miles of trail stretching border to border along the spine of the continent . It’s the only long trail that’s open to mountain bikes . Our goal is to thru-ride as much of the trail as possible, outside of Wilderness Areas, this summer.

As mentioned, an average thru- hike costs about $1000 a month once on the trail . If you take a longer hike , you will need more food, be out in the weather longer, probably incur more town costs and may need to replace more gear.
