On Jan. 17, 1893, Hawaii’s monarchy was overthrown when a group of businessmen and sugar planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate. The coup led to the dissolving of the Kingdom of Hawaii two years later, its annexation as a U.S. territory and eventual admission as the 50th state in the union.
It feels american enough but foreign enough, which is probably why it’s such a popular vacation spot (other than the fact that it’s the most gorgeous state in the country). When I visit, I obviously don’t have to worry about any different social norms like tipping, but I also am amazed at how relaxed Hawaiians are.
