Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting . Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly over the past week and remain above long-term background levels. The ongoing eruption at Kīlauea Volcano is not affecting Mauna Loa.

While our volcanoes are among the most active in the world, they are not always erupting. The current eruption started December 20, 2020. This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”. -> Current eruption status: there is a lava lake in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater!
Mauna Loa’s

Eruptions of Kilauea are certainly spectacular. Its cherry-red lava flows and roaring lava fountains are impressive, especially when seen at night. But relatively few people have been killed by Kilauea’s lava, because it is usually possible for people to get out of its path.

On April 30, the Pu’u ‘O’o crater on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, suddenly collapsed. It was the starting point for the volcano’s monthslong eruption, which went on to produce 320,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools’ worth of lava that transformed the landscape and ultimately destroyed 700 homes.
