Alaska is about one-fifth the size of the Lower 48. The next largest state, Texas, would fit into Alaska 2.5 times. In fact, if you combined the area of Texas, California and Montana, it would still be less than the size of Alaska .

The narrowest distance between mainland Russia and mainland Alaska is approximately 55 miles. The stretch of water between these two islands is only about 2.5 miles wide and actually freezes over during the winter so you could technically walk from the US to Russia on this seasonal sea ice.

Alaska is by far the biggest state in the USA. It is 663,267 square miles of rich broad land that has produced billions of dollars of gold and oil as well as fish, furs, and timber. Alaska is unspoiled, uncrowded and is vibrant with promise.
But it’s much easier to get a view of Russia view by heading out into the Bering Strait to one of America’s weirdest destinations: Little Diomede Island.
