It’s also one of the most difficult courses of the Major Marathons . With deceptively hilly bridges, a tough finish through Central Park, and screaming crowds that can make your adrenaline surge at the most inopportune times, the course can bring even the most elite runners to their knees.
1. Oprah Winfrey. Wearing bib No. 40 to match her age, Winfrey finished the 1994 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, in 4 hours, 29 minutes, and 20 seconds.
So has its popularity. The NYC Marathon isn’t just for elite runners either. Many participants are handicap athletes participating in wheelchairs or on handcycles (high-tech, hand-driven tricycles). Others simply walk it.
While many healthy individuals can complete a marathon with proper training and commitment, it’s not recommended that any runners jump right into the marathon distance (26.2 miles or 42K). Getting some race experience is good preparation for your marathon and will get you excited to start your training .
For runners who wish to qualify for the race, here’s the qualifying time you’d need for each age group this year (of course, these are subject in change each year): 18 to 44 years old — 2:45 for men, 3:00 for women. 45 to 59 — 2:55 for men, 3:20 for women. 60 and over — 3:25 for men, 4:10 for women.
A 3:00 marathon is approximately 6:50 per mile. To break 3:00, you should eventually be capable of a sub-1:25 half-marathon (6:30 per mile) and sub- 38:00 10K (6:00 per mile) Right now, you should be running at least 35-40 miles per week, over six or seven sessions.
Finish time : 8:52:33 at 7:58 p.m.
The use of headphones is strongly discouraged. If you choose to wear headphones , please ensure that you can hear all announcements and remain aware of your surroundings, including other participants.
Average Marathon Times Finishing times for marathons (26.2 miles) range from a little over 2 hours for world-class, elite marathoners to 8 or more hours for other participants.
Across the board, most people finish a marathon in 4 to 5 hours, with an average mile time of 9 to 11.5 minutes. A finishing time that’s under 4 hours is a real accomplishment for everyone other than elite runners, who can finish in around 2 hours.
The 26.2-mile run begins in Staten Island, with runners trekking over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge , and up through Brooklyn , Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, before ending at the southwestern corner of Central Park.
