Times Square was once named Longacre Square . It took on its current name in 1904, when The New York Times moved its headquarters to the area.

The opening of the Broadway subway between Rector Street and Times Square is more important than the length of the line suggests. Broadway property owners objected to the experiment of a subway on that route, and they have seen their values transfered to the Fourth Avenue route.
