While there is poverty, gangs, crime and some parts of Queens that some may consider as dangerous, the borough is not viewed as bad or even as urban as boroughs like Bronx and Brooklyn, but there are two main sections of Queens that are still deep within the urban neighborhoods of New York City.

Statistically the safest borough to live in crime -wise, Staten Island still has a lot of kills, the Dutch word for creek. There’s Fresh Kills, Arthur Kill, the Kill Van Cull, and my favorite, Great Kills.
Currently, Harlem is experiencing a new renaissance of sorts based in economic development and cultural preservation. Still known as the Black Capital of America, the history and culture of Harlem is evident today , even as the area experiences new growth and gentrification.
Harlem is as safe as any community in New York and has a great sense of community despite creeping gentrification. The people who live there want to be there and want visitors to know that. To be known as a Harlemite is a badge of honor that its residents wear with pride.
The name ” Bronx ” originated with Swedish-born Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639. The native Lenape were displaced after 1643 by European settlers.
