When is the Best Time to Visit Hawaii ? The best weather in Hawaii is in April, May, September, and October. November to March are the rainiest months , and June through November is hurricane season – though big storms are rare. Winter also brings the best waves for surfing, especially on north shore beaches.
You will find the daytime beaches lovely and the waters warm. Hawaii consists of several islands, each with its climate. Although December is Hawaii’s rainy season , March does tend to sit on the medium to high end of the state’s average rainfall.
The weather in March is quite nice — especially if you are coming from chilly, winter climates from North America. Daytime high temperatures generally average in the upper 70s to lower 80s F. You might want to bring a light sweater or jacket to wear in the evenings with an average low in the upper 60s F.
Generally, the best weather in Hawaii can be experienced in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rainfall along with warm water temperatures. However, Hawaii has pretty great weather year -round (after all, the Aloha State experiences only two seasons).
Hawaii’s Weather When it’s raining on one side of an island in Hawaii , though, the sun is usually shining on another, a short drive away. However, if the priority is to avoid heavy downpours in traditionally fun-in-the-sun locations such as Waikiki, Poipu, Kona and Kihei, the worst time to go is November through April.
Read more about the high season and the low season on Hawaii elsewhere on our website. In our opinion, the best time to avoid the crowds and find the cheapest tickets to the Big Island is between mid-April and May and in September and October.
Pack light cottons, sandals, socks and tennies, sundresses, shorts/capris, light weight tops. Bring an umbrella if you want. Bring a light cotton sweater and a hoodie sweatshirt. And, of course, jeans and warm clothes for the flight.
While many vacations are five to seven days long, we recommend staying for at least 10 days to enjoy your Hawaiian vacation. The time change is difficult to adjust to at first and takes about 3 days to get fully acclimated. So, allowing a couple days to get over the jet lag is important.
Visiting Maui in January, February, or March These winter months will be a bit cooler on Maui , and rainstorms are not uncommon during this time of year, especially on the windward (northeast) side of the island. One positive to extra precipitation is that this rain typically enhances the Road to Hana waterfalls.

Hawaii is one of the most- expensive areas in the United States, and the cost of food and lodging is notably higher than that of most other states. In Maui, travelers can expect to pay somewhere between $10 and $15 for breakfast, anywhere from $15 to $30 for lunch and considerably more for dinner.
There’s a dry season that corresponds to summer (Apr–Oct) and a rainy season in winter (Nov–Mar). It rains every day somewhere in the islands at any time of the year, but the rainy season can bring enough gray weather to spoil your tanning opportunities.
How much money will you need for your trip to Hawaii ? You should plan to spend around $269 per day on your vacation in Hawaii , which is the average daily price based on the expenses of other visitors. Past travelers have spent, on average, $61 on meals for one day and $29 on local transportation.
If you’re visiting Hawaii for the first time , I recommend selecting a single island for your vacation. This allows you to plan out a robust itinerary, relax, and experience the island to the fullest. Hawaii is made up of the following islands: The Big Island of Hawaii . Maui. Oahu. Kauaʻi. Molokaʻi. Lānaʻi. Niʻihau. Kahoʻolawe.
