Alaska consolidated to two time zones – Alaska Time and Hawaii-Aleutian Time – in 1983 to put our state capitol, Juneau, on the same time zone as the more populated Anchorage and Fairbanks (and to make doing business with companies in the Lower 48 states a little easier).
Sitka is totally lovely. It’s beautiful and I found having those views all the time improved my general happiness. It is a pretty small town, so if you are from a larger town and expect to have things to do regularly maybe this isn’t best for you. But if you like to be outdoorsy then it should work!
The cost of housing in Sitka is more expensive than the United States average and earns a score of 3 out of 10.
In 1867, when the United States purchased Alaska from the Russians, the transfer ceremony was held in Sitka , and Sitka became Alaska’s first capital city. Accessible only by air or sea, Sitka offers incredible scenery, fishing, hiking, abundant wildlife, and Alaska’s most culturally rich history and community.
In Sitka , the summers are cool and mostly cloudy; the winters are long, very cold , windy, and overcast; and it is wet year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 33°F to 62°F and is rarely below 22°F or above 68°F.
The 24-hour daylight and darkness still happen in Alaska, just less so. Barrow is one of Alaska’s northernmost cities and gets complete darkness for two months out of the year. During the summer , the sun doesn’t completely set in Barrow from early May until the end of July.
The center of the Alaska ( AK ) is 1 hour behind California ( CA ). PLEASE NOTE: Alaska may span multiple time zones. We are using the America/Anchorage time zone.
The states that observe more than one time-zone are Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska , Kansas , Texas , North Dakota, South Dakota , Florida , Michigan , Indiana , Kentucky , Tennessee , and Alaska. Among these, Alaska is the only state that is not part of contiguous United States.
The federal and state agencies in Alaska do not offer free land . The State of Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources however does have a Public Land Sale program and some other organizations in Alaska may occasionally offer land for sale to private citizens.

Alaska runs a program called the Alaska Permanent Fund, which, per the state website, allots an equal amount of the state’s oil royalties to every resident through an annual dividend.
