The TCS New York City Marathon entry fee is $255 . If you complete the “9 + 1 program,” which is one of the few ways to guarantee yourself a spot at the starting line, that means finishing, and paying for, nine qualifying races. When you factor in training, the experience as a whole is pricey and time consuming.
So has its popularity. The NYC Marathon isn’t just for elite runners either. Many participants are handicap athletes participating in wheelchairs or on handcycles (high-tech, hand-driven tricycles). Others simply walk it.

Any individual who has completed 15 or more New York City Marathons , along with entrants in the previous year’s marathon who had to cancel prior to the race, are eligible for guaranteed entry. The TCS NYC Marathon also has other programs, which may change from year to year, that provide guaranteed entry.
The New York City Marathon
By the numbers According to the Boston Marathon media guide, the Boston marathon has an estimated 500,000 spectators and the New York marathon has an estimated 1,000,000+ spectators. So in terms of sheer numbers there is no question you have more people cheering you on in New York .
In order to qualify , you need to be an NYRR member and complete nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races and volunteer for one event during the prior calendar year. This option is most feasible for those who live in the New York tri-state area, as all of the NYRR’s races take place in the five boroughs of New York City.
It’s also one of the most difficult courses of the Major Marathons . With deceptively hilly bridges, a tough finish through Central Park, and screaming crowds that can make your adrenaline surge at the most inopportune times, the course can bring even the most elite runners to their knees.
Most marathon races do not require a qualifying time. You just need to pay the entry fee and show up the date of the race. You need to run enough of your long training runs at your target marathon pace that you can be confident of achieving that goal.
Elite runners do not listen to music in races because they need to concentrate on their own bodies and hear their competitors, and some die-hard, old-school runners follow suit. Those runners – who prefer the sound of the crowd or their own breathing over, say, “Fergalicious” – cheered the headphone ban.
