Just January and February normally have temperatures this cold . For 18 days a year, on average, the city’s highest temperature doesn’t get above freezing. Such chilly days occur from December to March, but are usually most frequent in January.
Farmers’ Almanac predicts cold, wild mix for 2020 -2021 winter . Winter is coming, apparently with a vengeance. The Farmers’ Almanac recently released its extended forecast for the 2020 -2021 season, which shows this upcoming winter could be brutally cold and snowy for much of the country.
New York City, Long Island, And The Hudson Valley see the least amount of snowfall because they see warmer temperatures from the warmer ocean temperatures and the nor-easters there are mixed with rain, between 10-25 inches.

Old Forge, in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York, received a May record 24-hour snowfall of 14.0” on May 19, 1976.
Some studies indicate that the polar jet stream has weakened over the past three decades — which means that the cold surface air from high latitudes increasingly makes it down to middle latitudes. There are also some signs that the Arctic polar vortex, driven by climate change, is also weakening and shifting.
