Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting . Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly over the past week and remain above long-term background levels. The ongoing eruption at Kīlauea Volcano is not affecting Mauna Loa.
Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It is located on Big Island and is the volcano that had the large eruption event in the spring of 2018. It is classified as an erupting volcano. Mauna Loa has erupted 15 times in the past 120 years on Big Island.
The currently affected community of Leilani Estates is located near Pahoa in the Puna District on the east side of the Island of Hawaii . That area is about 25 miles from Hilo and over 100 road miles from the resort areas of Waikoloa and Kona.

While our volcanoes are among the most active in the world, they are not always erupting. The current eruption started December 20, 2020. This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”.
