North Shore (Hanalei, Princeville ) The North Shore is the most beautiful part of the island and one of the best places to stay in Kauai. We loved the mountain scenery, string of beautiful beaches, and cool town of Hanalei.
For your time on Kauai’s north shore, I would recommend staying in Princeville. Princeville is well-located in terms of beaches and tourist conveniences, and it’s also got a front-row seat to some of Kauai’s most gorgeous scenery (more on that later).

One thing is certain, Kauai has the perfect beach for every type of beachgoer. Kauai Beaches are known for their beauty and drama. Miles of white sand meet with crashing surf for dramatic effect; while other more protected areas offer calm, clear seas for swimming , snorkeling, and SCUBA diving, and surfing.

Princeville is a planned community on the lusher side of the island. May is perfect that time of the year. Poipu is known as the sunny side of the island, but in May its pretty darn nice all over. Ocean conditions are calm on the North Shore that time of the year so your snorkeling and beach action is at a premium.
Poipu Beach Park is considered among the safest in Hawaii, with a lifeguard on duty seven days a week. However, you should always check ocean conditions before entering and never be in the ocean alone. For the most up-to-date ocean conditions and safety tips, visit www.kauaiexplorer.com.
