The New York Colony was originally a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam, founded by Peter Minuit in 1626 on Manhattan Island. In 1664 the Dutch surrendered the colony to the English and it was renamed New York, after the Duke of York.
In 1626, the new governor of the colony , Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Native Americans for jewelry that was valued at $24. The city of New York was founded there. Governor Stuyvesant wanted to attack the English, but the citizens were unwilling to fight.

In 1626 the Dutch bought the island of Manhattan from Native Americans. In 1664, England renamed the colony New York, after the Duke of York and Albany, brother of King Charles II. New York City gained prominence in the 18th century as a major trading port in the Thirteen Colonies.
Following its capture, New Amsterdam’s name was changed to New York , in honor of the Duke of York , who organized the mission. A successful Dutch settlement in the colony grew up on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and was christened New Amsterdam .
The nickname “The Big Apple ” originated in the 1920s in reference to the prizes (or ” big apples “) rewarded at the many racing courses in and around New York City . However, it wasn’t officially adopted as the city’s nickname until 1971 as the result of a successful ad campaign intended to attract tourists.

Although the children of New Netherland worked hard, they also found time for fun and games. Children rolled hoops, played leapfrog, jumped rope, and played ninepins, a form of bowling. Quieter activities included card games, dice, backgammon, and ticktack, a game similar to tic-tac-toe.

A. Because it was America’s most populous city in 1800. History seems to be protecting New York City’s status as the most populous city in the United States. Since 1840, the densest American cities have not only grown substantially, they also represent a larger share of the American population.
1) It’s a big natural harbor. NYC is populated because it’s the economic capital of the US. The reason why it became the economic capital of the US has more to do with shipping. There are geographical and historical reasons why NY became an important port in the US, which resulted it businesses locating in Manhattan.
New York is an economic center where major trades take place. It was the place where immigrants mainly dock first and see the Statue of Liberty, which symbolizes hope and freedom. Its one of US’ most culturally diverse places due to immigration. Its also one of the most liberal places on Earth (I think).
The Dutch first settled along the Hudson River in 1624; two years later they established the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In 1664, the English took control of the area and renamed it New York .
Construction of New York City’s first subway line began with a contract between the Rapid Transit Construction Company and New York City on Feb. 21, 1900. The contract, worth $35 million and built upon a winning bid by John B.
