There’s massive news in the airline industry Thursday, as American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have announced a new partnership that will include domestic codeshares, reciprocal elite benefits and more. Perhaps most significantly, Alaska has announced its intention to join the Oneworld alliance by the summer of 2021.
“This new marketing agreement will allow Delta to partner with Alaska and Horizon to offer our passengers greater access to destinations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico,” said Delta’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer Paul Matsen.
Alaska Airlines partners with many airlines and you can earn and redeem miles on all of their partners (with a few exceptions – for example, you can only earn miles on American Airlines flights if you booked a codeshare flight with an Alaska flight number). American and Alaska already operate a codeshare agreement, which allows Alaska passengers to book an itinerary that includes flights operated by American , and vice versa. The agreement only covers certain flights under specific conditions.
Alaska Airlines , since it is not a member of any alliance, has two well-defined partnerships with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines that include such things as free checked bags, priority boarding, reciprocal airport lounge access, and upgrades.
Based on some objective customer experience metrics, Delta is now a better airline than Alaska . In the recently released J.D. Power 2019 North America Airline Satisfaction Study, Alaska Airlines won for the 12th consecutive year in the “traditional carrier” segment.
