Of the active volcanoes , two of them remain dormant: Haleakala on Maui, and Hualalai and Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island. Kilauea is the most well-known volcano in Hawaii , as it has been labeled as one of the world’s most frequently active volcanoes .
Hawaii’s Active Volcanoes . Two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and Maunaloa – can be found on Hawaii Island. Maunaloa last erupted in 1984, and Kilauea’s last eruption was 1983-2018.
Activity at Kilauea remains at very low levels, with no eruptions anywhere on the volcano, as has been the case since early September. It remains uncertain whether the eruption has completely ended or just temporarily paused.

The islands don’t last forever. As the Pacific plate moves Hawaii’s volcanoes farther from the hotspot, they erupt less frequently, then no longer tap into the upwelling of molten rock and die. The island erodes and the crust beneath it cools, shrinks and sinks , and the island is again submerged.
They’re very explosive volcanoes because they’re highly charged with gases. And so when they erupt, it’s very destructive. But Hawaiian volcanoes don’t contain a lot of water or other volatiles. Generally speaking, the Hawaiian volcanoes don’t erupt explosively; they produce relatively very slow-moving lava flows.
Even in liquid form, most lavas (essentially liquid rock) is more dense and heavier per cubic measure than your body. You’d sink to your ankles or knees depending on its consistency, then fall over and roast to death , briefly but still very painfully until your nerves burnt away.
It isn’t really an either/or question. You might burst into flames and burn when you hit the lava /magma’s surface (depending on the type, lava’s temperature ranges from approximately 1,200 to 2,200 degrees). You might also burn before you hit the lava /magma due to the radiant heat.
Lava won’t kill you if it briefly touches you . You would get a nasty burn, but unless you fell in and couldn’t get out, you wouldn’t die. Blong (1984) points out that little research has been done on injuries caused by lava . People have been killed by very fast moving lava flows.
