four active volcanoes
Of the active volcanoes , two of them remain dormant: Haleakala on Maui, and Hualalai and Mauna Kea on Hawaii Island. Dormant volcanoes are not considered completely extinct because they erupted within the last 10,000 years.
They’re very explosive volcanoes because they’re highly charged with gases. And so when they erupt, it’s very destructive. But Hawaiian volcanoes don’t contain a lot of water or other volatiles. Generally speaking, the Hawaiian volcanoes don’t erupt explosively; they produce relatively very slow-moving lava flows.
Eruption continues with active lava lake According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), the lava lake remains active and hasn’t shown big variations over the past days.

The most active volcanoes in the world Kilauea volcano on Hawaii is the world’s most active volcano, followed by Etna in Italy and Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion island.
Kohala is the oldest volcano on the island and makes up the northern part of the Big Island. Kohala is extinct , last erupting 60,000 years ago.
Kohala
Because the rate of ice melt has been increasing significantly since 1992 and the land is sinking due to a process called subsidence, Hawaii is particularly vulnerable to an increased rate of sea level rise in the future. Click here to learn more about the causes of sea level rise.
Kilauea
This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”. -> Current eruption status: there is a lava lake in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater! Next to seeing lava you can also enjoy many volcano-related highlights and activities while visiting our island!
Background Since June 25 2019 , Kīlauea Volcano has been at NORMAL/GREEN. For definitions of USGS Volcano Alert Levels and Aviation Color Codes, see: https://www.usgs.gov/natural-hazards/volcano-hazards/about-alert-levels. Kīlauea remains an active volcano, and it will erupt again.
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park has had an entrance fee since 1987. The current rate of $25 per vehicle or $20 per motorcycle has been in effect since June 1, 2017.
