Mongoose are not a cute and cuddly type of animal. They can be very vicious and angry when cornered, however, it is more than likely that they will quickly run away at the sight of a human.
Currently, methods of rodent and mongoose control include using live and kill traps, multikilling devices and diphacinone in bait stations. Diphacinone has been used in bait stations to protect Hawaii’s native species since the 1990s, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
Since Hawai’i has no squirrels this must be our very own Rikky-Tikky-Tavi, the Small Asian Mongoose . Known also by it’s Hawaiian name of ‘Iole manakuke (or just manakuke), the word ‘Iole means ‘rat’ and manakuke means mongoose.
With virtually no natural predator in Hawaii , the mongoose population increased exponentially, from the original seventy-two to the thousands we have today.
But Hawaii’s land-based wildlife is pretty benign. There are no predators, so the most dangerous creature you could encounter on a hike through Maui’s wilderness might be a startled wild pig or a centipede —which can give a painful sting, but it won’t kill you. No one has ever been maimed by a centipede .

The mongooses found in Hawai’i are native to India and were originally introduced to Hawai’i Island in 1883 by the sugar industry to control rats in sugarcane fields on Maui, Moloka’i and O’ahu. Mongooses can live in both wet and dry conditions including gardens, grasslands, and forests.
Rats and mice breed year-round in Hawai’i. The most common rat species associated with complaints in Hawaii are the roof rat (Rattus rattus) and the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus). The roof rat is an excellent climber and is found inhabiting trees, roof spaces and attics.

Despite their fascinating reputation for attacking venomous snakes, mongooses are non-aggressive towards human beings. However, at times they may bite as in the present case. Such wounds can cause streptococcal sepsis. Early debridement of wound and early administration of broad spectrum antibiotics can be life saving.

Hawaii has several species of protected and endangered birds. Hawaii has no native snakes , and it’s illegal to own the animals in the islands.
(What Eats a Mongoose?) Snakes , hawks , marabou storks , leopards , and jackals are all predators of the mongoose. Snakes will kill a mongoose to protect itself, but cobras and black mambas are unlikely to actually eat the mongoose. Larger snakes such as pythons have been known to eat mongooses.
