Surrounded by thousands of miles of salt water , life sustaining freshwater is one of Hawaii’s most precious resources. The recent finding may change long-held theories about the islands geology as well as how—and how much—fresh water can be stored underground throughout the Islands.
The Alenuihaha Channel lies between the Big Island of Hawaii and Maui. Its maximum depth is 6,810 feet (2,076 m) and it spans 29.6 miles (47.6 km). In the Hawaiian language, alenuihaha means “great billows smashing. The Alalakeiki Channel lies between Kahoolawe and Maui, a 6.7-mile (10.8 km) stretch.
The US state of Hawaii is an island group located in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States , about 4,400 km (2,800 mi) south of Alaska, and 4,200 km (2,600 mi) north of Tahiti (French Polynesia).

Certain ocean conditions can make Hawaii’s beaches hazardous for swimming — namely high surf, dangerous shorebreaks and strong currents. While Hawaii has one of the nation’s best lifeguard systems, some remote beaches do not have lifeguard towers. It is not recommended to swim at a beach that has no lifeguard tower.
ALASKA was a Russian colony from 1744 until the USA bought it in 1867 for $7,200,000. It was made a state in 1959. Hawaii was a kingdom until 1893 and became a republic in 1894. It then ceded itself to the USA in 1898 and became a state in 1959.
