While for most of Hawaii, the winter months are generally the rainiest, Kona’s drier season is generally from November through March, while the rainy season runs from April through October. However, there is not a striking difference between the two, especially in the area around Kailua-Kona.
The sunny Kona District stretches almost two-thirds of the entire West side of the island of Hawaii —from just south of Anaehoomalu Bay (Waikoloa Beach Resort) to Manuka Park (Kau). Along this expansive area, you’ll find everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks.

Most visitors come to Hawaii when the weather is lousy elsewhere. Thus, the high season —when prices are up and resorts are often booked to capacity—is generally from mid-December to March or mid-April. In particular, the last 2 weeks of December and first week of January, are prime time for travel to Hawaii .
Visiting the Kona ( West ) Side This side of the island is dry and barren, with lava fields stretching as far as you can see in some places. But the weather is considerably drier here than on the east side and the beaches are far superior on this side of the island too (even if some of them take a little work to access).
Reports from the State Department of Health indicate that travel to the Big Island is perfectly safe . The director, Dr. Virginia Pressler, says, “The air quality for the vast majority of the Hawaiian Islands is clean and healthy. This includes Hilo, Pahoa and the Kona and Kohala coasts on the island of Hawaii.”
Kona is the only region in the islands where summer rainfall exceeds winter rainfall . Our wettest month is September but this is no reason to avoid Kailua this month as in general (but by no means as a rule) it rains in the late afternoon or in the early evening.
Maui – The best sunshine is on West and South Maui . Oahu – Basically the southern and southwestern end of the island is the driest. Big Island – The Kohala Coast is super sunny year round where it only receives around 10 inches of rain each year.
Hawaiian Airlines is the only other air carrier that offers flights between the Hawaiian islands, but unlike Mokulele, its only direct flights between Kona and Maui go to the Kahului Airport. You’ll find three to six nonstop daily flights from KOA to OGG via Hawaiian Airlines.
