To drive around Hawaii based on my itinerary, it’ll take about eight hours . However, that’s without making many stops, and you’ll want to spend time at these places. To adequately see everything on this list and have enough time for meals, I would allow about 12 hours to drive around the Big Island.
Hilo is more affordable and has more local character. Hilo definitely feels less touristy than Kona , which is a good thing. Hilo has some great rainforests and waterfalls in the area, so it’s a good place for hiking and other outdoor activities. The Hilo side gets a lot more rain than Kona , so consider that as well.
The Big Island is the third most visited in Hawaii and offers accommodation for all budgets. It tends to be cheaper than Maui and it has two very different sides: Kona (west side) and Hilo (east side). In Kona there are many resorts and hotels with prices usually a bit higher than in Hilo.
The best time to visit Hawaii’s Big Island is between September and November. That’s when the island’s generally reasonable room rates take the most significant plunge.
Visiting the Kona ( West ) Side This side of the island is dry and barren, with lava fields stretching as far as you can see in some places. But the weather is considerably drier here than on the east side and the beaches are far superior on this side of the island too (even if some of them take a little work to access).

Honolulu and Waikiki – The capital of hustle and bustle in Hawaii , Honolulu is the state’s largest city, and has the most on offer when it comes to urban pursuits. If you want to stay busy and have a great beach vacation, Honolulu is the best place to stay in Hawaii .
Oahu: The Least Expensive Hawaiian Island to Visit . Due to the abundance of hotels, activities, tours, and attractions, Oahu is the most affordable island for tourists to visit .
Kona has the most people on the Big Island and because it caters so well to tourists, it can feel crowded and touristy. If you are looking for a more secluded getaway, I would tell you to stay in Waikoloa. Plus, Kona is also about two hours from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, another main attraction on the Big Island .
Regardless, the Big Island is still almost twice as big as all other Hawaiian Islands combined. If you want to be in control of your own transport there is only one viable option to navigate around the Big Island : renting a car . Getting around without a car : With public transport (the bus)
While for most of Hawaii, the winter months are generally the rainiest, Kona’s drier season is generally from November through March, while the rainy season runs from April through October. However, there is not a striking difference between the two, especially in the area around Kailua-Kona.
