Hawaii’s Active Volcanoes. Two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and Maunaloa – can be found on Hawaii Island. Maunaloa last erupted in 1984, and Kilauea’s last eruption was 1983 -2018.
Kilauea is considered one of the worlds most frequently active volcanoes . If you just look at the number of Kilauea eruptions recorded since Europeans arrived, there have been 62 eruptions in 245 years, which comes out to 1 eruption every 3.95 years.

Tom Birchard, a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Hawaii , said lava poured into the crater and mixed with the water to cause a vigorous eruption for about an hour. When lava interacts with water it can cause explosive reactions.
Activity at Kilauea remains at very low levels, with no eruptions anywhere on the volcano, as has been the case since early September. It remains uncertain whether the eruption has completely ended or just temporarily paused.
While our volcanoes are among the most active in the world, they are not always erupting. The current eruption started December 20, 2020. This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”. -> Current eruption status: there is a lava lake in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater!
While your lungs would almost undoubtedly be irrevocably charred from the hot air above the lava (assuming relatively static air conditions over the lava ), it takes about 80 seconds for the average human to fall unconscious from lack of oxygen, and I highly doubt your body will last that long.
Most of these deaths were caused by volcanic mudflows in the Philippines, pyroclastic flows in Indonesia, lava flows in the Democratic Republic of Congo and volcanic projectiles in Japan. Last year three tourists died in Italy when they fell into a pit in a volcanic crater. Such lava flows don’t kill many people.
It isn’t really an either/or question. You might burst into flames and burn when you hit the lava /magma’s surface (depending on the type, lava’s temperature ranges from approximately 1,200 to 2,200 degrees). You might also burn before you hit the lava /magma due to the radiant heat.
Lava won’t kill you if it briefly touches you . You would get a nasty burn, but unless you fell in and couldn’t get out, you wouldn’t die. Blong (1984) points out that little research has been done on injuries caused by lava . People have been killed by very fast moving lava flows.
Slowly , slowly , the Big Island of Hawaii is sinking toward its doom. From its palm-fringed beaches to the summit of Mauna Kea, 13,796 feet high, nothing will remain of that volcanic island but a small, stony lump on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in the far northwest, thousands of miles from where it stands today.
Kilauea – in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park – is the most active of the five volcanoes that form the Hawaiian islands. Its most recent eruption began December 20, 2020, around 9:30 p.m. local time (7:30 UTC on Monday).
They’re very explosive volcanoes because they’re highly charged with gases. And so when they erupt, it’s very destructive. But Hawaiian volcanoes don’t contain a lot of water or other volatiles. Generally speaking, the Hawaiian volcanoes don’t erupt explosively; they produce relatively very slow-moving lava flows.
