Island of Hawai’i
The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The Kilauea Visitor Center is located on Crater Rim Drive off of Highway 11 between the 28 and 29 mile marker south of Hilo. The visitor center is opened daily between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting . Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly over the past week and remain above long-term background levels. The ongoing eruption at Kīlauea Volcano is not affecting Mauna Loa.
Background Since June 25 2019 , Kīlauea Volcano has been at NORMAL/GREEN. For definitions of USGS Volcano Alert Levels and Aviation Color Codes, see: https://www.usgs.gov/natural-hazards/volcano-hazards/about-alert-levels. Kīlauea remains an active volcano, and it will erupt again.
Eruption continues with active lava lake According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), the lava lake remains active and hasn’t shown big variations over the past days.

Kīlauea erupted nearly continuously from 1983 to 2018, causing considerable property damage, including the destruction of the towns of Kalapana and Kaimū along with the renowned black sand beach, in 1990. During the 2018 lower Puna eruption , two dozen lava vents erupted downrift from the summit in Puna.
Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes . It is a shield-type volcano that makes up the southeastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii. The volcano rises 4,190 feet (1,227 meters) above sea level and is about 14 percent of the land area of the Big Island.
Located 45 miles southwest of Hilo , the park is home to two volcanoes including Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on earth.
While our volcanoes are among the most active in the world, they are not always erupting. The current eruption started December 20, 2020. This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”. -> Current eruption status: there is a lava lake in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater!
Make Kīlauea Visitor Center your first stop when entering the park. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Closures & Seasonal Exceptions.

Eruptions of Kilauea are certainly spectacular. Its cherry-red lava flows and roaring lava fountains are impressive, especially when seen at night. But relatively few people have been killed by Kilauea’s lava, because it is usually possible for people to get out of its path.
Hawaii’s Active Volcanoes . Two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and Maunaloa – can be found on Hawaii Island. Maunaloa last erupted in 1984, and Kilauea’s last eruption was 1983-2018.
