Background Since June 25 2019 , Kīlauea Volcano has been at NORMAL/GREEN. For definitions of USGS Volcano Alert Levels and Aviation Color Codes, see: https://www.usgs.gov/natural-hazards/ volcano -hazards/about-alert-levels. Kīlauea remains an active volcano , and it will erupt again.
The Koolau and Waianae volcanoes are about 2 to 3 million years old. No Oahu volcano is active . Tourists also enjoy visiting the crater at Kilauea’s summit, which is 4,009 feet (1,222 meters) above sea level and inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Tourists also like to watch lava flowing down Kilauea into the ocean.
Volcano tours in Hawaii are the perfect way to experience the rich volcanic history of the Hawaiian Islands. Tours to the most active volcano , Mt. Kilauea , depart from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hilo on the Big Island.
Activity at Kilauea remains at very low levels, with no eruptions anywhere on the volcano, as has been the case since early September. It remains uncertain whether the eruption has completely ended or just temporarily paused.
While our volcanoes are among the most active in the world, they are not always erupting. The current eruption started December 20, 2020 . This means that the answer to the question “ can we see lava in Hawaii ?” is “yes!”.
Except for the occasional vog, the main islands of Oahu , Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai are unaffected by the volcano . And even on the Big Island, it’s business as usual. The only exception is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Puna District and nearby areas.
The Eruption Diamond Head is part of the Ko’olau Range. The vents are now extinct and Diamond Head has been dormant for about 150,000 years. Diamond Head is believed to be monogenetic, meaning the eruption only occurs once. Therefore, geologists believe that Diamond Head will never erupt again .
Hawaii’s Active Volcanoes . Two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and Maunaloa – can be found on Hawaii Island. Maunaloa last erupted in 1984, and Kilauea’s last eruption was 1983-2018.
Lava won’t kill you if it briefly touches you . You would get a nasty burn, but unless you fell in and couldn’t get out, you wouldn’t die. With prolonged contact, the amount of lava “coverage” and the length of time it was in contact with your skin would be important factors in how severe your injuries would be!
Mauna Loa’s
If you’re particularly looking to see “Red Hot Lava “, these are among the best places to go to: #1: Stromboli volcano – the lighthouse of the Mediterranean. #2: Dukono and Ibu – Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. #3: Erta Ale, Ethiopia: the best lava lake to see from close.

Kilauea volcano
Kilauea volcano , a youthful shield volcano , sitting on the south east flank of the massive Mauna Loa shield volcano , is the youngest volcano (on land) of the Hawaiian hot spot and not only the most active volcano of Hawaii but at the same time also the world’s active volcano .
