The Road to Hana isn’t a highway to be driving at night . The drive itself IS the attraction, so soak it in – trade off drivers if you can so everyone can sit in the passenger’s seat for a time.

The two most recent deaths were both located at a section called Maliko Gulch near mile marker 11. In 2019, two local girls in their early 20s mistakenly drove off the 200-foot cliff in their truck when missing a turn at night. 2018, a 47-year-old local man died in the same location during the day.
Most all rental car companies on Maui will allow you to drive to Hana . Driving the backside of Haleakala, past Oheo Gulch, goes against most Maui rental car agreements. ROAD is open: The best parts of driving to Hana are between Paia and Seven Sacred Pools, so it shouldn’t be an issue.
The Hana Highway is great from a car, but to appreciate it, you’re going to have to stop frequently, get out of the car, and in some cases, walk or hike a bit to see things. For us, this is ideal. But not everyone likes the idea of even light hiking, so keep that in mind when deciding to make the drive or not.
The best times to visit Maui are April through May and September through November. The spring and fall shoulder seasons provide the pleasant weather Hawaii vacationers seek without the high rates and heavy crowds that accompany the summer and winter.

How much time do you need in Maui? We recommend at least one week in order to experience all that Maui has to offer. While you can get a flavor of Maui even if you just visit for a day or two, as a minimum, try to plan 3 to 5 days in Maui.

1. Re: Road to Hana – ACTUALLY dangerous or just kind of scary ? IMHO, it’s neither dangerous nor scary . Yes, it’s curvy, and yes, you do need to be careful around blind curves, but it’s paved all the way and not bad to drive.
Day 1 – Fly in, get a car, check into your hotel/condo, have a bite to eat and catch the sunset. Day 2 – Snorkel boat in the morning (early), spend some time at the beach, luau in the evening. Day 3 – Haleakala sunrise, explore upcountry Maui. Day 4 – Road to Hana …
