The Open Door policy was a statement of principles initiated by the United States in 1899 and 1900. It called for protection of equal privileges for all countries trading with China and for the support of Chinese territorial and administrative integrity.
Negotiated the opening of Japan to western trade. Secretary of State who urged open trade for China. How the United States expanded in the Pacific before 1870 . Opened Japan to the west, annexed Midway Island, and purchased Alaska.
By the late 1890s , Japan and several European powers had carved out spheres of influence in China . These were sections of the country in which each of the foreign nations enjoyed special rights and powers. Japan, Germany, Great Britain, France, and Russia all acquired spheres of influence in China .
The eight nations’ spheres in Qing China were designated primarily for trade purposes. Great Britain , France, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany, Italy, Russia , the United States, and Japan each had exclusive special trading rights, including low tariffs and free trade, within Chinese territory.

The Open Door Policy was a clever move on the part of the United States to create trade opportunities between the U.S. and China while additionally asserting American interests in the Far East. In the short term, the Open Door Policy allowed the United States to expand its markets for industrialized goods.
This maritime expansion , driven mostly by commerce, had important implications for U.S. foreign policy. The appeal of profits to be earned from the China trade served as the initial impetus to motivate U.S. citizens and officials to enter into the Pacific region.
Americans supported the idea of overseas expansion in the late 1800’s because they wanted to expand trade to Latin America , to spread democracy, to politically influence the other countries, and expand so America has more territory.
Why did the United States look to the Pacific for new markets ? For new markets because Japan gave the United States trading rights at two Japanese ports, and also there were any resources like sugar cane in Hawaii. The Spanish-American War occurred outside of America’s land border and also that it was extremely short.
US Imperialism in China The Spheres of Influence in China was when different European nations had control over prosperous Chinese ports and had control of trade in that region disregarding the rights of the Chinese people.
According to the map, the second largest sphere of influence in China is Britain , the largest one being Russia. Britain’s sphere of influence was located to the west of Shanghai, in Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan. Also, there was some influence in the south-eastern part of China, next to Japan’s sphere of influence.
In 1900 a crisis erupted in China as the “Boxers” increased their resistance to foreign influence and presence. In the fall of 1899, Secretary of State John Hay wrote that the United States , a late arrival, wanted to maintain an “open door policy” in China.
The creation of the Open Door Policy increased foreign influence in China , which led to a rise in anti-foreign and anti-colonial sentiment in the country. The backlash against foreigners led to widespread killings of missionaries working in China and an increase in nationalist feelings among the Chinese .
(a) Western powers divided China into spheres of influence because many Chinese people wanted changes, but disagreed. In 1945 there was more fighting but while China was fighting against Japan, the Communists carried out major social reforms in the parts of China they had controlled.
