Faced with severe shortages of oil and other natural resources and driven by the ambition to displace the United States as the dominant Pacific power, Japan decided to attack the United States and British forces in Asia and seize the resources of Southeast Asia.
Japan had invaded much of East Asia to create what they called the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere”, now largely viewed as a pretext for imperialism. Japan saw this as a hostile and provocative act, and retaliated with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the declarations of war on the US and the British Empire.
The Nanjing Massacre led to the increased tension between the United States and Japan in the year 1937 . This is because didn’t like what the Japanese did in China and in other parts of Asia. The killings they made to many are not really favorable to the US .

They were the most ferocious soldiers of their time. Because of that, I think they considered Americans somewhat cowardly because we would rather surrender than die.
The main power was KMT and it was extremely corrupted. Weak central government, lack of modern industrial base, various levels of corruption. Chinese troops when trained and decently equipped performed well.
The Japanese attack had several major aims. First, it intended to destroy important American fleet units, thereby preventing the Pacific Fleet from interfering with Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya and to enable Japan to conquer Southeast Asia without interference.

Imperial Japan didn’t want Hawaii , it was too far away from their primary manufacturing/production land (in simple terms).
