Butte began in the late 1800s as a gold and silver mining camp. At the turn of the century, the development of electricity and the industrialization of America resulted in a massive copper boom, and Butte flourished.
Home of the Copper Kings. These are just a few descriptions and synonyms for a small mining camp turned industrial giant called Butte Montana. It’s also been my home since day one. It’s hard to believe that nearly 10,000 miles of underground mining tunnels are beneath my feet at any given time.
One of the most dangerous towns/cities (yes compared to major cities) is Butte, MT. The drug problem, theft, and violent crime is through the roof, and the statistic show an increasingly worse upward trend for these factors. This means that safety is in decline in MT.
As Butte’s population and economy tanked, the struggle over cleanup began. About 370 people still work pulling copper and the metal molybdenum out of the area’s only remaining active mine , the Continental Pit.
