Nebraska’s legislature is unique among all state legislatures in the nation because it has a single-house system. It wasn’t always a unicameral, however.
Senators are elected to four-year terms and receive a salary of $12,000 a year. A single Legislature exists for two years, called a biennium. There are two regular lawmaking sessions per biennium.
The Nebraska Legislature (also called the Unicameral) is the supreme legislative body of the state of Nebraska. Its members are called “senators”, as it was originally the upper house of a bicameral legislature before the Nebraska House of Representatives was abolished in 1934, effective 1937.
The citizens of Nebraska agreed with Norris and voted to change the structure of the Legislature in 1934. Since 1937, Nebraska’s unicameral legislatur – the smallest state legislature in the countr- has consisted of 49 senators from across the state who each serve for four years.

Legislative Assembly. For every state, there is a legislature, which consists of a Governor and either one or two houses. Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have bicameral legislatures, with the remaining states having a unicameral one.
Unicameral means “one-chambered”, and the term almost always describes a governing body. Our federal legislature, like those of most democracies, is bicameral, with two legislative (lawmaking) bodies—the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, have bicameral Legislatures, the rest all have Unicameral Legislatures. In these 6 states with Bicameral Legislature, the upper house is called State Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad), one-third of whose members are elected every two years.
Congressmen don’t reap their annual salary for life . They do receive generous retirement benefits though. To collect their full pensions, congressmen must be at least 62, or at least 50 with 20 years of service. By federal law, senators and representatives cannot earn their full salary in retirement.
