Given the royalties of a standard contract, an author selling 20,000 books priced at $25 would earn $65,625 the first week on the “New York Times” best-seller list. This is not quite the millions superstar authors bank, but if the book continues to sell, these earnings add up to an impressive income.
NYT bestseller list is based on distributor orders from the publishers, not actual sales. They get a lot of press and push to sell because they want their money back. To add to this, I believe that a book can be considered a best-seller if more than 10,000 copies have been sold.

Average book authors don’t make a lot of money . A typical book author barely makes more than minimum wage. You receive an advance and 10% royalties on net profit from each book . If your book retails at $25 per copy, you would need to sell at least 4,000 copies to break even on a $5,000 advance.
Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on a single book sale while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties. First – time authors who want to traditionally publish can get an advance, which is usually $10,000 (usually not that much more for a first -timer).

If you self – publish , and do a proper job of marketing, your book may not only achieve success in its own right, but may be picked up by a major publishing house. (Ironically, it may even be published by one of the houses that has previously sent you a rejection slip.)
Usually, Amazon will change a book’s price because: its knowledge base indicates that you will sell more books at that price than the one you chose. the book is already doing well and it thinks it will sell even better with a discount.
The reason is because there are hundreds of best seller lists and the book only needs to land on one of them to be able to say that. Sometimes they’ll say “ best selling author” instead. Books are ranked by pre sales, too, which is how brand new books wind up on the lists (which change weekly).
A bestseller is a book or other media noted for its top selling status, with bestseller lists published by newspapers, magazines, and book store chains. Some lists are broken down into classifications and specialties (novel, nonfiction book, cookbook, etc.).
