New Amsterdam
The modern Manhattan is derived from these early names. Dutch settlers named the lower part of the island New Amsterdam in 1624. When the English seized the land in 1664, they renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York.

The nickname “The Big Apple ” originated in the 1920s in reference to the prizes (or ” big apples “) rewarded at the many racing courses in and around New York City. However, it wasn’t officially adopted as the city’s nickname until 1971 as the result of a successful ad campaign intended to attract tourists.
The song is an ode to his hometown and state New York , New York . The line “So Good They Named It Twice ” is a play on the fact the name of the city and state are both ” New York “.

The colony of New Netherland was established by the Dutch West India Company in 1624 and grew to encompass all of present-day New York City and parts of Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The Bronx is named after Jonas Bronck, who settled in the area in 1639. Brooklyn refers to Breukelen, the Dutch village in the Netherlands.
New York’s growth in the early nineteenth century was driven by the rise of manufacturing in the city, which itself depended on New York’s primacy as a port. New York’s growth in the late nineteenth century owed at least as much to its role as the entryway for immigrants into the United States.

Before New York was New York , it was a small island inhabited by a tribe of the Lenape peoples. One early English rendering of the native placename was Manna–hata, speculated to mean “the place where we get wood to make bows”—and hence the borough of Manhattan.
The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum , at 5816 Clarendon Road, Brooklyn, is the city’s oldest surviving stucture. Built in stages beginning around 1652, it housed descendants of Pieter Claesen Wyckoff until 1901, when they sold the property.
Arguably New York’s most identifiable symbol, Liberty Enlightening the World (the Statue of Liberty), a gift from France for the American centennial, was completed in 1886. In the 1850s, Democratic Tammany Hall became one of the most powerful and durable political machines in United States history .
