The pipeline became commercially operational on June 1, 2017. Protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline occurred at several places because of concerns about the pipeline’s impact on the environment and to sites sacred to Native Americans.

The main issue behind the protests was the construction of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline (CGL) through 190 kilometres (120 mi) of Wetʼsuwetʼen First Nation territory in British Columbia (BC), land that is unceded.
