The term “ Civil War ” first appeared in newspapers way back in 1929 — when an Oregon coach equated the game’s importance in the state to the Civil War — and it caught on. Or, in these games, it’s often been husband vs. wife in allegiance to one school or the other.

Oregon State Football Rivalry Will No Longer Be Called ‘Civil War’ Oregon State University and the University of Oregon announced Friday games pitting their sports teams against each other will no longer use the term “Civil War” to describe the rivalry.
The Oregon – Oregon State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry game played annually in the state of Oregon , between the Ducks of the University of Oregon in Eugene and the Beavers of Oregon State University in Corvallis as part of their ongoing college rivalry.
The Civil War , previously called the ” Oregon Classic” dates back to 1894. Since the first game, there have been 120 games with the Ducks leading the series 63-47-10. Although both teams share the longest win streak in the series at 8 games a piece, the Ducks went 13 years without losing to the Beavers from 1975-1987.
Although it’s no longer called the Civil War , the rivalry between Oregon and Oregon State will be still be heated Friday, Nov. 27. The game will be live streamed on fuboTV. The two teams will meet for the 124th edition of the rivalry, which dates back to 1894.
During the Civil War , southern sympathizers in Jacksonville, Oregon raised the Confederate flag before thinking better of it. During the Civil War , Oregon raised six companies of cavalry. Known officially as the First Oregon Cavalry, they served until June, 1865.
