There are sand roads and designated rides between South Jetty to the Siltcoos River (Florence Area), small areas with the highest and most dramatic dunes in Umpqua Riding area (Winchester Bay), and large areas with varied riding opportunities between Spinreel and Horsfall (Coos Bay/North Bend).

However, for truly impressive dunes, the best route is the John Dellenback Dunes Trail, which has its trail head a half mile south of Eel Creek Campground (11 miles south of Reedsport). This 3-mile round-trip trail leads through an area of dunes 2 miles wide by 4 miles long.
The sand in the Oregon Dunes is from the Coast Mountain Range, which is sedimentary rock that was uplifted 12 million years ago. As rock was moved downstream by rivers, it tumbled and abraded itself into sand . Tides, wave action and strong coastal winds moved sand up to 2.5 miles inland for thousands of years.
