Adopt-a-Highway is a Texas-born program that allows volunteers to adopt stretches of state-maintained roadway to conduct litter pickups. Interstate and high traffic highways are not eligible for the Adopt-a-Highway program.
The Adopt-a-Road program offers several benefits to its communities. It provides a clean environment, gives civic pride to the community, serves as a reminder not to litter and saves tax-payers money.
The Adopt-A-Street Program is a partnership between the City and its merchants and residents. Groups or individuals agree to adopt an area and take responsibility for keeping the street , sidewalk, and storm drain clean.
The enduring appeal of adopting a highway, according to current CEO Melinda Centner, is that it is a relative bargain by advertising standards. Adopting (or sponsoring) a highway through AAHLRSA costs $200 -$600 per month. In contrast, billboards that are visible from highways often cost $7,000 -$14,000 per month.
