At the epicenter of skiing in Utah is Salt Lake City. While there are no ski resorts right in the city, eight of the best ski resorts in Utah are within an hour’s drive. Park City, just 40 minutes outside of Salt Lake City, is a popular ski town with the ski resorts of Park City and Deer Valley on its doorstep.
The Best Beginner Ski Runs in Utah Alta . With three beginner lifts, Alta is one of the best locations for families, as it also features tons of expert terrain. Brighton. Close to Salt Lake City, Brighton is home to tons of beginner terrain, and offers plenty of kid-friendly instruction. Eagle Point . Powder Mountain .
Utah’s tallest ski area, Alta, tops out at just over 11,000 feet, while Colorado has several with summits over 13,000, as well as the highest chairlift in North America at Breckenridge Ski Resort. β Colorado is at a higher elevation and generally has lighter, fluffier snow,β Thayer says. βIt just doesn’t get as much.β
Best skiing is January through March for the Park City areas, and all the way through April for the higher Snowbird , Alta, Solitude, Brighton, Snowbasin. Spring skiing is great, powder in the morning and tee shirts in the afternoon.

Most Utah ski resorts close mid-April, though late season snow can extend the season on some mountains by a weekend or two. Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort enjoys Utah’s longest ski season, typically offering good conditions into mid-May.
The ski runs, while not as impeccable as those at Deer Valley nor as plentiful as those at the Canyons, are diverse and easily available. In other words, Park City Mountain generally opens more runs than Deer Valley or Canyons earlier in the season depending on the snow.
With 60% of its terrain marked as beginner or intermediate, and boasting the most skiable acres in the U.S. (7,300+ acres), Park City is a great ski destination for families of all sizes, ages and skills.
All of Snowbird’s terrain is steeper and more challenging that the majority of Salt Lake City ski resorts. Therefore, intermediate skiers should test out the terrain on the bottom half of the mountain before hopping on the Tram.
Utah better scenery, weather, less libs and more wide-open spaces. Colorado is beautiful, no doubt about it (well, the western half at least).
